I will like to use a string of micro-inverters on a PV-array to deliver AC through a string inverter so that the battery bank attached to the string inverter can also be charged during the day and at night receive power by inverting DC from the battery. Can this work beyond theoretical view?

No, there are no off grid micro-inverters on the market that I know of. That means to use them in an off grid system you have to create an AC coupled PV system.

Hi Marvin, recently Sun Pirate released information to the effect that they have a non grid tied micro invertor--their product is used to create hot water. I believe that is what I read~about 2 weeks ago.
