I have 24 200 amp hour batteries running at 48 volts.   My generator keeps coming on to charge the batteries; even when I shut off most appliances my battery bank calls for the generator after about 6 hours, which I figure means the inverter used at least 900 watts during that time. I need to know if the inverter is indeed consuming this much energy..thanks.

Your inverter is using 25 watts if it's producing any AC waveform - even with no load.  If it's not producing AC, then it should be drawing less than 6W DC.
Are you sure that all AC loads are off?

One or more of your batteries may have gone bad.You should test each one individually. If a battery shorts internally, it absorbs a lot of the charge, without giving any back. So a small load drops the voltage enough to cause the generator to start.
