Hi All,

I'm using standoffs to fasten a Ironridge rail system to a asphalt roof (3 tab)

But not being a prof. roofer not sure how to mount the standoff to the truss system.

The roof is currently cleared down to bare plywood so I'm wondering during the installation of the new roof, when do I mount the standoffs and what sealants and flashing  materials to use.

The stand-offs are 4inches tall and 1 1/2 in diameter.

There are several layers that make up a 3 tab roof, so on what layer should the stand-offs be mounted  and is the use of flashing optional ?

My guess is I must use a pipe roof flashing, probably made by Oatey. and installed immediately below the top most roofing layer.

But let me know if I'm wrong here.

Todd,

You are correct on the pipe collar flashing. Here are the steps we recommend:

  1. Mark rafters on the felt as soon as felt is in place.
  2. Use marking on felt to lay out standoffs
  3. Attach standoffs, through felt,  to rafters by at least two of their four holes, using 5/16" x 3" lags or whatever is an appropriate length for your structural requirements. We suggest two of the 5/16" x 3 1/2" GRK Structural screws per standoff for most normal installations. GRK Link
  4. Install shingles and flash with Oatey No-Caulk or similar flashing.

What are your thoughts on covering the mounting base with a roofing sealing compound?
