I have a Sun Saver solar charge controller SS-6L 12V 6A, match with a 80 W panel, and a deep cell battery 77amp.I have 2 questions:

Is this the right controller for this unit?

How come the led green light, saying'' charging'' is on even when the panel is not connected? Could it be that I damage the controller when I short circuit the wiring only for 10 sec., a smell of burning came , and I disconnected everything right away, ?

Most likely if you smelled something burning then you damaged the controller. The fact that the charging light is on all the time does not help.

"A friend" completely ruined a brand new Xantrex XW 60 Charge Controller by hooking it up wrong. It took less than 1 second, so 10 seconds is plenty enough to ruin anything. The burning smell also indicates trouble.
