SMA released the transformerless Sunny Boy 8000TL, 9000TL and the 10000TL inverters.   I think that Fronius and Power-one both also have a transformerless solar inverter on the market.

  • What is the correct application for a transformerless inverter?
  • When can you use one and when can't you?
  • What are the advantages of a transformerless inverter?

Thanks for the help on this.

Comments

1) The transformerless inverter is suitable for 208V three phase applications.

2) The transformerless inverter has no galvanic separation. You won't ground the DC circuits of the PV modules connected to the inverter. You would only ground the mounting frame of the PV modules; thus it saves time on installation.

3) The main advantage of the transformerless inverter is that it reduces weight and it has higher efficiency than an inverter with transformer. It increases the speed of payback.
