I am trying to figure out the optimal direction for my panels given that I have some shading issues true South. Any thoughts?

In the northern hemisphere, your PV array should be faced due South (180 degrees) for optimal collection, but there's wiggle room. Within 25 degrees of true South, you'll still collect 98% of the sun's energy. Shading is actually far more important than direction. If turning east or west a bit helps you avoid shading, it is advised. Here is a link to a good overview that explains in more detail: http://www.macslab.com/optsolar.html
