What is the importance of 'cells per module'? Should I pay attention to this specification while choosing a solar panel?

Comments

As the number of cells increase in the module, so does the power rating.

Uni-Solar offers a 11 cell panel that is rated at 68 Watts.  We also offer a 22 cell panel that is either 136 Watt or 144 Watts. Also with the increase of cells so will the dimensions.

Another important factor that is determined by the number of cells is the module voltage.

Most of the industry solar modules right now are 60 or 72 cells. Each cell is usually around 0.5V.

A 60 cell module would have a Voc of around 30-37V; whereas a 72 cell module would have a Voc of around 42-48V.

If you look at Kyocera 135SX module, which is an off-grid module, it has 36 cells and has a 22V Voc. https://www.greentechrenewables.com/product/kyocera-kd135sx-upu-j-box?qty=2

The Voc is important when string sizing for inverters, determining which Enphase inverter to use or choosing a charge controller.
