SMA is new to me, using the SB7700TL do I need batteries for the system to work without the grid power?
I hear I can plug devices directly into the inverter, is this true?

To use grid tied inverters "off-grid" or during a grid failure, you need to have batteries and a battery inverter. The SMA 7700 TL is a little different: You can add the secure power supply option and also use limited power direct from the inverter with NO battery during a power failure.
