I purchased both the Sunny Beam and Piggyback card.  If I am using Sunny Explore, It appears to me that I do not need the Sunny Beam Device.  I only need an approved USB Bluetooth device for the computer.

Can someone clarify?

If you have Sunny Beam communication card (piggy back card) installed in your inverter, you can display the power/energy data both on Sunny Beam devices and on Sunny Explorer installed computers.

You are right, you will need an approved USB bluetooth device for your computer (as discussed on the installation manual page 10- I'll copy them below)

Having a Sunny Beam device is not necessary but just convenient, as the energy output data is available regardless of your computer.

--> here is the usb bluetooth section:

Recommended Bluetooth sticks:
• FreeTec Bluetooth Mini-USB adapter; Bluetooth 2.0; Class 1
• Longshine USB Bluetooth Adapter (LCS-8147); Bluetooth 2.0; Class 1
USB Bluetooth sticks manufactured by AVM are not supported.
Supported Bluetooth stacks:
• Microsoft with Service Pack 2 or higher
• Toshiba
• BlueSoleil
• Broadcom

OK.  If I bypass the Sunny Beam device, connect the USB Bluetooth device to my computer, I would have to essentailly leave my computer on 24/7 to collect the data. Another alternative might be buy a second computer like a netbook and leave it on 24/7 to collect data.  The Sunny Beam collects a 100 days worth of data.
