Sitting upon the Van Nuys Airport in sunny Los Angeles, CA, this expansive 3 MW commercial installation was completed by Current Energy in March 2023. The substantial installation began in the Fall of 2021, and our Greentech Renewables San Diego location ensured timely delivery and premier access to top-tier products throughout every step of the process.

Featuring Sungrow 60kW 3-phase string inverters and Heliene modules, the Van Nuys Airport array will produce over 4,345,000 kWh per year for at least 20 years. The project is a part of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's (LADWP) Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program, allowing Pacific Aviation to sell energy back to the grid for a set price.

Current Energy reported that this project has several complex challenges to address. The array would cover over 12 hangars and buildings, becoming one of the largest rooftop solar systems in any of California's airports. The LA World Airports (LAWA) upheld stringent requirements, which the installers worked through with our representatives at Greentech Renewables San Diego and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The system is connected directly to the LA Department of Weather and Power (LADWP) medium voltage line through a switchgear and vista switch. This project also spans multiple buildings with large trenches with electrical conduits carrying transformers and medium voltage lines.

All the staff involved worked arduously to overcome the intricacies of this project, but it was well worth it. The result looks tremendous and provides dependable renewable energy that offsets carbon emissions equal to over 89 million miles of driving!
