LCOE is used for solar projects to describe the comparative cost between different systems. LCOE is determined by dividing the project’s total lifetime cost of operation by the total energy generated. By using LCOE, a project developer can determine which technology has the best overall lifetime return.

Here's a great tool brought to you from the folks at NREL - for visualizing LCOE variables: http://www.nrel.gov/analysis/tech_lcoe.htm
